Vitamin B12 in human blood and serum. I. Comparison of microbiologic assays using normal subjects.

چکیده
HE MICROORGANISMS used for Vitamin B12 (cyanocobalamin) assay are LaCtobaciUus lewhmanniz (1), Euglena gracilis (2), Ochromonas maihamensis (3-5), and a mutant strain of Escherichia COli (E. coli 113-3) (6). Improvements in protozoan assays for B12 show such assays to be more sensitive and specific than bacterial assays (2, 7, 8). Ochromonas maihamensis is highly specific for true forms of B12 and shows an excellent correlation with vitamin B12 activity in animals (3, 9). In this article we report a comparison of results of vitamin B12 assays on normal whole blood and serum using the four organisms listed above.

An improved radioisotope dilution assay for serum vitamin B12 using hemoglobin-coated charcoal.
A radioisotope dilution assay for vitamin B12, using hemoglobin-coated charcoal, was modified in several respects, the most prominent of which was the use of cyanide extraction of sera. With these modifications, the B12 levels were significantly higher in sera from normal subjects and patients with folate deficiency, whereas sera from patients with pernicious anemia and other B12-deficient stat...

متن کاملComparison of serum vitamin B12 estimation by saturation analysis with intrinsic factor and with R-protein as binding agents.
It has been reported that serum vitamin B12 levels assayed by saturation analysis methods may give misleadingly high results, so much so that the diagnosis of vitamin B12 deficiency may be obscured. This defect was ascribed largely to assays using a vitamin B12 binder other than pure intrinsic factor. To test out this hypothesis two assays were set up, one using saliva (non-intrinsic factor R-b...
متن کاملبررسی سطح سرمی ویتامین B12، Folate و هموسیستئین در سالمندان سالم تهرانی
Background & Aim: Owing to decreased absorption of cobalamin in the elderly, cobalamin deficiency is a common problem in these subjects. On the other hand, insufficient vitamin B12 status may increase the incidence of atherosclerotic and neurodegenerative disorders. Recently investigators have recommended B12 monitoring in the elderly and detecting at risk subjects in the early stages of d...
متن کاملSerum levels of vitamin B12, folic acid, and homocysteine in patients with vitiligo
Background and Aim: Vitiligo is a hypopigmentation disorder of the skin that is associated with depression and an impaired quality of life. There has been conflicting reports on the association between the disease and the serum levels of homocysteine, vitamin B12, and folic acid.In this study, serum levels of homocysteine, vitamin B12, and folic acid were evaluated in patients with vitiligo.Meth...
